Egyptian Glass Mabkhara — Lahab · Flame Cup with Ruffled Gold Rim, 18 cm (Model 143)

A flame of glass with a crown of gold — the mabkhara that looks lit before the charcoal is.

Lahab, “flame”, is a flame-shaped cup on a gilded foot. The rim is pinched open by hand into a ruffled crown and traced in 24K liquid gold, so the smoke of the oud leaves through a collar of light. The body is optic-ribbed, drawn in from a wide shoulder to a narrow waist, then set on a flared gold-banded base that keeps the heat off the table.

It is the burner for the modern majlis and for hotel and spa lobbies: a sculptural silhouette that reads from across the room, in clear glass that shows the ember, or in blue and rose that glow with it. It pairs naturally with the etched pieces of the Naqsh set.

Mouth-blown in our Cairo workshop from borosilicate glass, no moulds. The gold is fired into the surface rather than painted on, and every ruffle is pinched while the glass is still hot — which is why no two crowns fall the same way.
