Kawkab — "planet" — is a clear globe banded in colour and 24K gold, raised on a twisted stem and closed with a domed lid pierced with glass rings. Lift the lid, add water and essential oil or a wax melt over a tealight, and the fragrance escapes through the rings in a soft, even way. Used with a charcoal disc it becomes a small covered incense burner, the way it is used in the Gulf.

Mouth-blown in Cairo from heat-resistant borosilicate glass. The closed shape keeps dust off the oil between uses and makes it the most "finished" piece on a shelf — a natural centrepiece for a home-fragrance display or a boutique hotel room.
