A globe of colour caught in a net of gold — the mabkhara named after Cairo’s carved wooden screens.

Mashrabiya is a lidded mabkhara in three parts: a coloured glass globe wrapped in a hand-drawn 24K gold lattice, a fitted lid that lifts off to reach the charcoal bowl, and a twisted crystal stem on a gold-rimmed foot. Closed, it is an ornament for the console; open, the smoke rises through the lattice and the pattern glows against the glass.

It is the piece Gulf gift retailers put in the window for Ramadan and Eid, and the one corporate buyers choose for engraved gifting because the lid gives the logo a clean place to sit. At 25 cm it holds a shelf on its own.

Each piece is mouth-blown and the lattice is trailed by hand in our Cairo workshop; no two nets fall exactly the same way.
